Thanks for all of the posts :) I'll start by giving all of you some more infomation about what we have for building the rocket. One of my friend's dad works at a company that builds and sell accurate lathes, and he said that we might be able to use one as a test for the actuall product. I also happen to have access to a CAD software called Unigraphics. It also has a CAE section that we could use to test some of the rocket before actually building it. We also have some people who would be willing to work hard on this project. Now what we dont have is much experience with engineering, altough my dad and phisics teacher did study mechanical engineering in college, we also dont have any money saved up, so we will have to get money raised for this project. I am not sure if we have someone who is skilled enough in welding. My uncle is pretty good at welding, but he only works on cars and bikes, so we may have to have someone weld for us. The thing that we are considering the most important is safety, so we will take all of the precautions that we can. :) So it seams like it may be a better idea to go with a hybrid rocket, just because we dont know enough about the engineering aspects. Please tell me what you all think, and if there is something else you would like to know, please ask. Thank you again for the information everyone :) Kelly Mann P.S. oh and Zach, the second book you suggested is the one that i have been looking at recently, and i will see if i can find the other book somewhere. And i think i will be able to make the conference this year. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please forwards this message to students and anyone you think might be interested. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Kindest regards, Lealem Mulugeta Director of Expeditions Mars Society Canada *********************************OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT************************** *Expeditions Delta and Epsilon - Call for Applicants * *The MSC Needs Twelve New Crewmembers for MDRS Training Expeditions * *Please forward this to anyone whom you think is interested. * The Mars Society of Canada (MSC) is now accepting applications for ExDelta and ExEpsilon ? two-week training and research missions to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah. The purpose of ExDelta and ExEpsilon is to certify new recruits for participation in future large-scale research expeditions, to expose researchers to the facilities and environment typically available in a Mars analog setting, and to cross-train participants in several areas including geology, biology, technology and operations as they pertain to human Mars exploration. The two-week expeditions will take place in February and March of 2008. ExDelta and ExEpsilon will be the Mars Society of Canada's fourth and fifth training missions respectively, building on the success of MSC's three previous training missions ExAlpha(2004), ExBeta(2006), and ExGamma (2007) at MDRS that featured studies involving the local geology and biology, crewmember physiology, crew dynamics, field-testing of new fieldwork protocols, EVA traverse planning, and work-study task and procedure analysis. The focus of these training missions is to prepare crewmembers for participation on future large-scale expeditions being planned for the Canadian arctic, Iceland, Australia and the Atacama Desert in Chile among other locations. Examples of previous large-scale MSC expeditions include ExOneand ExThreeat MDRS, and ExTwoin Arkaroola, Australia. MSC also has significant representation on the 2007 FMARS 4 month summer expedition. Individuals who have not participated in either a training or a prior research-class expeditions will not be eligible to take part in future full-scale expeditions led by the Mars Society of Canada. Further information about past MSC Training and Research missions can be found at http://www.expedition-mars.org Applications are being sought for 12 crewmembers to make up two sets of the following 6 positions: Geologist, Biologist, Chief Engineer, Field Engineer, Extravehicular Activity Systems Engineer and an open-ended Researcher. ExDelta and ExEpsilon will have a focus on Canadian participation; however applications will be accepted from exceptionally qualified candidates from around the world, provided that the applicant is capable of legally entering into the US for the expedition itself, and into Canada for any related future conferences, training, expeditions or other opportunities. Applications will be accepted from anyone who does not have previous planetary surface analogue research experience, in good physical condition and of at least 18 years of age without regard to race, creed, colour, or gender. Scientific, engineering, practical mechanical, first aid, wilderness, and communication skills combined with a good sense of humour are all considered a plus. Every trainee must be able to commit to the full two weeks. The Mars Society of Canada will pay travel and related expenses between Salt Lake City, Utah and MDRS during training and simulation, but there will be no salary or other travel reimbursement. Travel between the crewmember's home country and Salt Lake City must be self-funded or supported by external sponsors / institutions. For additional information including details regarding crew roles, the application process and the submission of research proposals, please visit: http://chapters.marssociety.org/canada/expedition-mars.org/ExDeltaEpsilon For additional information, please contact *exmats@gmail.com* All applications and research proposals are due *June 15, 2007. * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... SEDS is ready to launch its newest National Project entitled: *They Were There. *The goal of this project is to collect interviews of the top space professionals active in the space indistry now or in the past and to create a database accessible to SEDS members of their wisdom and advice. *We need your help!* If you would like to interview one of these top space professionals, you can! SEDS will match you with someone and provide some suggestions on conducting the interview and some possible questions to ask. Then, you will conduct the interview and report back to us with what you learned. A written summary of your interview will be published on our website and on our national blog. This is a great way to develop a personal relationship from someone who "has inside scoop" and has "been around the (space-related) block" so to speak. Reply now if you are interested in conducting an interview and if you have any preference on what type of professional you would like to interview. We will try to make a match as soon as possible. Check our website ( www.seds.org) for new interview postings and updates on the project. Chapter Representatives, please send this to your membership. Another reminder email will be sent in early fall for those who are busy until school begins. Thanks! Elizabeth Bozek -- Elizabeth A.
